Composite Station Post Insulator

Composite Station Post Insulators are polymer-based substation insulators designed to provide both electrical insulation and mechanical support under service loads. Covered by IEC 62231 and IEC 62231-1 for AC systems above 1,000 V up to 245 kV, they typically consist of a resin-impregnated fiber load-bearing core, a silicone or EPR housing, and permanently attached end fittings. In substations, they are commonly used for busbar supports, reactors, and disconnectors where high mechanical strength, cantilever performance, creepage distance, and impulse withstand capability are required, making them a compact and lightweight alternative to traditional rigid insulators.

Product Accessories

Corona rings are used on higher-voltage station post assemblies to control electric-field stress and help meet RIV performance; notes that some 1800 kV and 2050 kV BIL station-post applications may require corona rings depending on the installation.

Base mount and flange hardware are part of the station-post mounting package, and Welldone Power specifies station-post units with two base mount ends in accordance with AS 4398.1.

Galvanized cap screws, threaded inserts, and metal fixing parts are commonly supplied with the assembly to secure the insulator to the structure and equipment frame; notes that caps and flanges are made from drop-forged steel, malleable iron, or ductile iron and are hot-dip galvanized.

Special shed-profile options can be selected for polluted, coastal, or heavy-icing environments, and states that alternative petticoat profiles are available to meet specific customer requirements.

Product Advantages

Icon logo

Compact strength in a lighter package

Composite station post insulators combine high electrical insulation with strong mechanical performance while remaining significantly lighter than traditional porcelain solutions.

Icon logo 2

Better performance in harsh environments

Manufacturers highlight pollution resistance, hydrophobic polymer housings, and optimized shed profiles for demanding substation locations.

Icon logo 1

Lower maintenance and easier system integration

One-piece designs, durable galvanized fittings, and reduced handling weight support faster installation and lower total cost of ownership in substation projects.
