Surge Arrester

Surge arrester is a gapless metal-oxide device used in AC power systems above 1 kV to protect equipment from temporary and transient overvoltages by staying non-conductive in normal operation and diverting surge current to ground during lightning or switching events, with selection based on system voltage, continuous operating voltage, rated voltage, discharge current, protective level, and energy duty.

NEMA metal bracket for standard pole or structure mounting.

NEMA insulating bracket for selected voltage ranges, including versions for Ur ≤ 15 kV and Ur > 15 kV.

Silicone rubber insulating bracket for alternate mounting and creepage needs.

Transformer bracket and cross-arm bracket for transformer top or cross-arm mounting.

Ground strap and insulated line/ground lead for grounding connections.

Disconnector and visible fault features on selected distribution designs to isolate a failed arrester from the system.

Product Specifications

Standard compliance
IEC 60099-4; many product lines are also qualified to IEEE C62.11.
Arrester type
gapless, non-linear metal-oxide resistor type.
Continuous operating voltage
Uc under IEC, MCOV under IEEE.
Rated voltage
Ur, used as the arrester reference voltage in IEC practice.
Nominal discharge current
IEC class values range from 1.5 kA to 20 kA; 5 kA is important for medium-voltage distribution, while 10 kA and 20 kA are common for higher-voltage duties.
Residual / discharge voltage
the voltage appearing across the arrester during discharge current flow; it defines the protective level.
Energy capability
expressed through line discharge class, repetitive charge transfer rating (Qrs), thermal charge transfer rating (Qth), and thermal energy rating (Wth), depending on class and standard.
Housing material
polymer, porcelain, or silicone-composite hollow-core designs are all used in current product families.
Application voltage range
manufacturer portfolios span from medium-voltage distribution duty to EHV service; published families cover roughly 3 kV up to 1,200 kV, with some ranges extending to 612 kV or more depending on the product family.
Safety / overload features
selected designs include pressure-relief behavior, short-circuit capability, disconnector options, and visible fault indication for damaged units.

Product Applications

Product Advantages

Icon logo

Fast, targeted overvoltage protection

the arrester diverts surge current quickly, helping keep the protected equipment below damaging insulation stress.

Icon logo 2

Flexible construction and mounting

polymer, porcelain, hollow-core, bracketed, and disconnector-equipped versions make it easier to match different utility and industrial installations.

Icon logo 1

Better field serviceability

selected designs add visible fault indication, grounding disconnectors, and weather-resistant housings that support maintenance and replacement work.
